2023 IM²C Competition Results
The ninth annual International Mathematical Modeling Challenge brought together student teams from around the world to apply mathematics to a complex land-use decision. After national and regional selection rounds, 55 teams advanced to the international round, representing countries and regions invited to participate in the 2023 challenge.
2023 Modeling Problem: Using Land: A Valuable Resource
The 2023 IM²C problem asked teams to determine the best use of a three-square-kilometer parcel of land near Syracuse, New York.
Teams developed a quantitative decision-making method that considered geography, climate, community needs, local culture, business opportunities, and both short- and long-term costs and benefits. They evaluated options such as farming, solar energy, recreation, and agritourism, while also considering how a planned semiconductor facility in the region could affect future land-use priorities.

Congratulations to all 2023 Teams
The 2023 International Mathematical Modeling Challenge asked students to balance competing priorities and recommend how a valuable piece of land could best serve its surrounding community.
We congratulate every student, advisor, and participating school for the thoughtful analysis, creativity, and teamwork they brought to the challenge. Their solutions demonstrated how mathematical modeling can help communities evaluate difficult choices and plan for the future.
